Query fan-out analysis

One prompt, many searches: see the query fan-out

AI engines rarely answer a prompt with a single search. They break it into sub-queries and build the answer from what those return. WriteWorks maps the fan-out behind every prompt you track, so you can see the long-tail intent your content has to cover to be part of the answer.

The challenge

Why the headline prompt is not enough

Engines search more than they show.

You optimise for the prompt, engines search the sub-queries

A page written for the headline question can miss the narrower searches an engine actually runs to assemble its answer, and never get pulled in.

The long tail behind a prompt is invisible

Prompt tracking shows whether you appear. It does not show the specific angles, comparisons and follow-ups the engine explores along the way.

Content planning stops at one keyword

Without the fan-out, briefs cover the obvious question and leave out the sub-topics that decide which sources get cited.

Fixes go unverified

Content ships and the task closes, but nobody re-checks whether the answer itself actually changed.

The solution

How query fan-out analysis works

Map the sub-queries, track the change, plan the coverage.

Expand any tracked prompt to see its query fan-out variations, with how many times each sub-query appears and how that count moved against the previous period.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams typically ask before getting started.

What is query fan-out?+
Query fan-out is the technique AI search engines use to answer a prompt: they split it into several related sub-queries, run those searches, and combine the results into one answer. Google has described AI Mode working this way.
Why does query fan-out matter for content?+
Because the sources an engine cites come from the sub-queries, not only the original prompt. A page that covers the sub-topics an engine searches for has more chances to be retrieved and cited.
Are these the exact queries the engines ran?+
Not yet. Today the fan-outs in WriteWorks are AI-predicted sub-queries for each prompt, and the product labels them that way. Treat them as a map of what an engine is likely to search for, not a log of what it did.
How do I use the fan-out in my content?+
Treat the most frequent sub-queries as the sections, comparisons and follow-up questions a page needs to answer. Prompts with wide fan-outs usually need more comprehensive pages than prompts with narrow ones.
