AI bot traffic by intent

AI bot traffic, split by what each bot came for

Not all bot traffic is equal. A bot fetching your page to answer a live question, one indexing it for an AI search engine and one collecting text for model training are three different signals. WriteWorks splits your AI bot traffic by intent, engine and page.

The challenge

Why bot traffic needs a second look

Some of it now decides whether AI cites you.

Bot traffic is treated as noise

Most analytics setups exist to remove bot traffic. That made sense when bots were scrapers and spam. Now some of those bots decide whether your brand appears in AI answers.

One AI bot total hides the story

A rise in AI bot traffic might be a training crawler bulk-collecting your archive, or citation fetches growing because AI engines use you as a source. The total looks the same either way.

No sense of which engines matter

Without a per-engine split you cannot tell whether OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity or Google accounts for the activity, or which way each is trending.

Mentions never reach the pipeline

Brand mentions inside AI answers rarely surface in analytics, so the work can't be tied back to revenue.

The solution

How WriteWorks splits AI bot traffic

By intent, by engine, and in context.

WriteWorks classifies every AI bot request as citation, indexing or training, and shows each as its own trend line, so a rise in citation fetches never hides behind training volume.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything teams typically ask before getting started.

What is bot traffic?+
Bot traffic is any request to your site made by automated software rather than a person: search engine crawlers, AI crawlers, monitoring tools and scrapers. AI bot traffic is the subset sent by AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Google.
Is AI bot traffic good or bad?+
It depends on the intent. Citation and indexing bots are how AI engines find and use your pages in answers, which you usually want. Training bots collect content for future models, which is a policy decision. Splitting by intent is what makes the question answerable.
How does WriteWorks classify AI bot traffic?+
Each request is matched against a registry of 27 named AI crawler signatures, resolved to one of 15 platforms, and assigned a bot type such as AI Citation, AI Indexing or AI Training.
Why doesn't AI bot traffic show in Google Analytics?+
Google Analytics relies on a JavaScript tag and excludes known bots. AI crawlers generally do not run JavaScript, so their visits only appear in server-side data, which is what WriteWorks reads.
Which plans include AI bot traffic analytics?+
Growth and Enterprise plans and agency plans. It is not part of Starter.
